Trying to rewrite how Test cricket is played in England – Stokes

It was a monumental day for English cricket on Tuesday, July 5 as they beat India in the fifth Test match at Edgbaston. The seven-wicket win for England saw them level the five-match Test series at 2-2, a year after it was rescheduled. Speaking after the clash Ben Stokes talked about how his team has been writing history on multiple fronts as they chased a record total of 378 runs.

“We are trying to rewrite how Test cricket is being played, in England especially,” Stokes told Sky Sports.

“All the different plans that we put together over the last four or five weeks, for every different situation is something we’ll look to carry forward.

“It’s been the most fun five weeks I’ve had in my career so far,” Stokes said.

“I don’t think everyone can understand what’s happened here. When you get clarity in what you want to do and what you want to achieve, and think about bigger than results, it makes everything a lot easier.

“It takes away the external pressure of what international sport can throw at you. When you know what you want to go out there and do, it makes everything a lot more simple,” the recently appointed England skipper added.

England chased a record total at Edgbaston to write history, never before had a total this magnitude been chased. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow were the keys to England’s success, the former scored an unbeaten 142 runs. On the flip side, Bairstow scored 114 runs and ended being the ‘Player of the Match’. Root’s heroics saw him clinch the ‘Player of the Series’ as India ended as the second-best.
