Team India to tour Australia twice in next FTP cycle, the number of Test matches increased to five : Reports

Team India is all set to tour Australia twice in the upcoming Future Tours Programme (FTP) for the 2024-31 cycle, that’s according to a recent report. It is also reported that India could be playing five Test matches in the tour, however, these are still reports and not confirmed.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) will have its annual meeting later this month on 25 and 26th July in Birmingham. While the selection of new ICC President will be on the agenda, it also expected that there will be much talk about the FTP, where India could be touring Australia twice.

An extended window of two and a half months for the Indian Premier League (IPL) will also be on the agenda. The current cycle of the FTP will run from 2024 to 2031, while India have recently been successful in winning Test series Down Under.

It is interesting to know that the ICC is planning to include India in a five-match Test series against Australia, having earlier signed a similar deal with England. In the 2018-23 cycle, India sighed a deal with England to play, five-match Test series similar to the Ashes.

If that concept does come on pitch, the India and Australia series will be the third bilateral series after the Ashes to contest five matches in a series. So with two Australian tours on the paper, it will be interesting to how India succeed, India famously won a Test series to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) on the Australian soil in 2021.

While it is still unknown when India will tour Australia, the radical change in cricket should once against see the dominance of Indian Cricket. With increase number of IPL games and teams, it is also likely that the IPL will definitely have an extended run. Currently, the IPL has a window of two months in the Indian summer to negotiate.

If the plans do go forward, the fiancés of both the IPL and ICC could be increased significantly. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is also planning a mini three-team tournament, which is also on agenda. They are likely to oppose the idea of extended run of IPL window, as no Pakistan player participates in the tournament.
