Stamford Bridge witnessed the inevitable. Chelsea is not the same as the one who was crowned in the Champions League last season. It is even the same one that started this Premier League 2021 in an overwhelming way. It became something else: a team that no longer plays for itself.
The Blues had to host Brighton for matchday 20 and needed a victory to get closer to Manchester City -the leader of the tournament- and pass Liverpool on the table. Chelsea started being the protagonist on their court. Mason Mount and Romelu Lukaku had the first two chances to open the scoring and were responsible for finding each space.
About half an hour into the game, Marcos Alonso launched a cross from the corner and Lukaku connected with a great header for 1-0. The Belgian striker has scored his third goal in the last 4 games and seems to be making friends with the ball again.
From the moment of the goal, Chelsea seems to have changed team, stadium and location, because it was not seen again in the match. He completely yielded the management of the game and was even surpassed in the possession of the ball, shots, passes and the statistics that they wanted.
Brighton proved that when it sets out, it is up to the task. His previous encounter with Brentford left more than a smile and the reaction against Chelsea made it clear that his position in the table can be a lie.
Adam Lallana, Yves Bissouma and Alexis Mac Allister had an impeccable match to pull the strings of the team and tested the rival goal more than once. Edouard Mendy became a figure. If Neal Maupay had been more connected, the story was different.
The Seagulls got the tie on the final. With a minute of added time, they planted their team in the rival field with the lanes, Tariq Lamptey and Solly March, advanced to the baseline. Marc Cucurella stopped in the middle of the field like just another midfielder and was in charge of centering so that Danny Welbeck appeared in the area and burst the goal with a header.
The English forward had entered minutes before and scored his second goal in the Premier League. It was to get a tie that is worth gold on difficult terrain. Chelsea are left on their knees and their fans look askance at a team that was left standing in the title fight. Stamford Bridge witnessed the horror.
