Manchester City started the Champions League Round of 16 in a friendly scenario to settle the series in the first leg: they thrashed Sporting Portugal 5-0 away.

The English team went into the break with a four-goal lead and after half an hour of play, it was predictable that the Portuguese side would be overwhelmed by an onrushing machine.

Only seven minutes after the opening whistle when Riyad Mahrez fired the ball into the net after Adam had denied Phil Foden’s initial shot.

It was initially ruled offside, but after two minutes of tension and waiting between the players, the VAR ruled it valid.

It was the beginning of the English gale over Sporting, who were unable to respond dangerously to their opponents.

Ten minutes later, Bernardo Silva, highly motivated in his homeland and against the capital rival of the team in which he grew up – he is from Benfica’s youth academy – signed his first goal with a left-footed bomb that burst the crossbar and slipped into the goal.

Guardiola’s men continued to control the match as they wished. Sporting, with Pedro Porro playing a very active role, did not manage a shot on target until the 36th minute, with a shot from Pedro Gonçalves.

In the 32nd minute, Foden scored the third with a shot at pleasure in front of a weak Green-White defense. Half an hour and the game were settled.

On the stroke of half-time, Bernardo Silva scored his brace with a first-time shot that touched Inácio before entering the goal.

Despite the obvious superiority of his team, Pep Guardiola did not stop giving instructions to his players from the sidelines with nervousness throughout the first half.

After the break, the Citizens did not want to let up: Raheem Sterling scored the fifth after 58 minutes with a long-range shot into the top corner.

Guardiola then decided to move the bench to rest players like Foden and Rodri, while the Sporting fans, with the best capacity of this season at the Alvalade, did not stop cheering despite the heavy defeat.

In the 92nd minute, with 0-5 on the scoreboard, they stood up and chanted for Sporting, scarf in hand, but Rúben Amorim’s team, emotionally sunk, could not even react to make up the result.

It is hard to find a team in better form than Manchester City in Europe. Pep has led them to twelve consecutive victories in the Premier League and to dominate it with a nine-point lead over the second-placed team.

With the tie decided, the second leg will be played in Manchester on March 9 and we can look forward to a tie that could end up as one of the biggest in history.
