Willy Caballero is the new goalkeeper Southampton has hired because of the injuries to its two main goalkeepers. The 40-year-old Argentine was free and training with AFC Wimbledon after being part of the Chelsea squad that won the Champions League in May this year.

Southampton had a dirty trick: Alex McCarthy, the main goalkeeper, suffered a hamstring injury in the last game against Brighton and Fraser Forster, the substitute, suffers from a muscle problem of which nothing has yet been determined. The leaders had to go out to look for a firefighter and the former goalkeeper of Boca Juniors, Manchester City and Malaga, among others, appeared on the radar.

Will Caballero stay the entire season? No, Argentina’s experienced goalkeeper at the 2018 FIFA World Cup signed a contract for just one month! The CEOs of the Santos surprised everyone and defined that the union with Willy will be until January 5.

Caballero’s career is not only recognized for his last stint with the London team where he had a role as a third experienced goalkeeper.  Willy was champion of the Copa Libertadores with Boca, emigrated to Spain due to lack of minutes and found his first international experience in Elche, but an operation on his daughter forced him to return to Argentina.  Arsenal de Sarandí sheltered him in 2006 and at the end of the assignment he returned to Elche.  In 2011 he landed in Malaga, where he had the best experience of it: he started and reached the quarterfinals of the Champions League.  In 2014 he was transferred to Manchester City for £ 8 million and was there until 2017.

The Argentine goalkeeper will return to the Premier League and is already at the disposal of the coaching staff for Saturday’s game against Arsenal and the next trip to face Crystal Palace. Although it remains to be decided whether Ralph Hasenhüttl, Southampton coach, will decide on Caballero or the third goalkeeper, Harry Lewis.
