1st IND vs NZ 2021 – Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli aren’t in today’s match?
Both players are taking some well-deserved time off from international cricket. Virat Kohli was also granted a break from the just-finished T20 series after more than six months of cricket. He’ll miss the first Test, but he’ll be back in Mumbai to play and lead the second. Kohli has already begun his preparations at Wankhede Stadium.
Despite sharing nearly the same workload as Virat Kohli for the past six months, Rohit Sharma played T20s for the first time as a full-time skipper in the format. He’ll be unavailable for both Tests and will only be available for the forthcoming South Africa tour.
KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma’s opening partner, will also miss both Tests after tearing his hamstring lately. He is receiving rehabilitation at Bengaluru’s National Cricket Academy and is expected to be fit for the South African tour.
Pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, who has carried most of India’s fast-bowling weight in the last 12 months, are also resting in the Test series. Rishabh Pant, the wicketkeeper-batsman, has also gotten some well-deserved rest. Wriddhiman Saha, a veteran goalkeeper, will take the gloves for this rubber.
Who will replace Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the 1st test match?
Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli’s long-serving vice-captain, will lead the team in the opening Test. He’ll also likely bat at No. 4 in the match, replacing the 32-year-old. Former Delhi Capitals captain Shreyas Iyer has made his debut for India, and will very definitely slot in at no. 5 between Rahane and Saha.
With both Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul out, India will start the series with a new opening partnership. Shubman Gill and Mayank Agarwal were injured during the team’s August trip of England and will now take guard together at the top of the order. Both teams will try to create an impression before the regular season begins.
