Real Madrid out of Copa del Rey – Football News

Real Madrid fell to Athletic Bilbao due to an agonizing goal from Berenguer and was left out of the Copa del Rey in the round of 16. Those led by Ancelotti have ten days to settle in and face PSG in the Champions League.

By Facundo Di Bona (@facudibona).

First big setback of the Ancelotti era: Real Madrid fell 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao and was surprisingly eliminated from the Copa del Rey in the quarterfinals.

Without the dream of the triple crown, the Meringues will have to go in search of La Liga and, at the same time, bet their chips on the Champions League.

In the previous one, the duel with the Basque team was not going to be easy at all: those from Bilbao had just eliminated Barcelona in a great round of 16 game, also in an agonizing manner.

At 89 minutes, Alex Berenguer -who came on for Nico Williams in the second half- shot from the edge of the area and got the final 1-0.

Real Madrid, full of shortcomings and mistakes -especially from the middle forward- suffered until the end and ended up receiving the blow of the KO in one of the last plays of the game.

Athletic Bilbao was more throughout the 90′, although the statistics show what could be clearly observed: a close match, with few net situations for each of the teams.

Although the people from Madrid managed the times in general terms, they were unable to deepen their attack and suffered from the rival’s advances throughout the day.

Beyond the great game played by the central defense, made up of Nacho Fernández and Éder Militao, and by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who had nothing to do with the goal, those led by the experienced Italian coach were seen to be apathetic.

Luka Modric and Toni Kroos failed to become owners in midfield and attacking men, Marco Asensio, Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr, were not a threat to rival goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala either.

Real Madrid will have to settle because what follows in February is a Champions League tie against none other than Paris Saint-Germain.

For the round of 16, the Parisian team will first receive Real Madrid on February 15 and then they will travel to define the key in Spain on March 9.
