Ravi Shastri claims attempts were made to prevent him from becoming India coach

Ravi Shashtri has sensationally claimed that an attempt was made to prevent him from becoming India’s head coach.

Shashtri took over from Anil Kumble in 2017, who reportedly resigned after a spat with Indian Test captain Virat Kohli. He was appointed by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising of Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, and VVS Laxman.

He led the team to several overseas Test victories in Australia, England, and South Africa. India are currently leading England 2-1 in the series which is to be completed next July after it was postponed following a coronavirus outbreak in the Indian camp in September 2021.

The former cricketer stood down from his role following India’s exit at the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup earlier this year.

In a recent interview with The Times of India, Shashtri revealed that he was the frontrunner for the head coach job in 2016 before Kumble was appointed, but the board decided to opt for his former teammate instead.

Kumble was offered a one-year contract, but following Team India’s loss to Pakistan in the 2017 Champions League final where they lost to Pakistan, BCCI opted not to offer him a new contract.

Shashtri was appointed as coach in July that year, but he opened up about the time he missed out on the role in 2016, and added that attempts were made to ensure he didn’t get the job in 2017 as well.

Without taking any names or pointing fingers, he said: “During my second stint, I came after a huge controversy. They opted for someone and nine months later, they came back to the very guy they threw out.

“And I’m not pointing any fingers at people (BCCI) in general. Specific people. I must say an attempt was made to ensure I don’t get the job. But such is life.”

He added that the decision made by the BCCI “hurt him” because of the way it was done and admitted that there were better ways to let him know that he wasn’t being appointed as head coach.

Shashtri was initially given a contract until the 2019 World Cup, where India suffered a heartbreaking exit in the semifinals. His contract was then extended by two years and he eventually stepped down earlier this year.

Rahul Dravid took over from Shashtri and has already lead the team to a home series win against New Zealand. He will be looking to replicate the results in the upcoming Test series in South Africa that starts on December 26.
