Unusual: The British government froze Roman Abramovich’s assets and Chelsea, which still belongs to him, cannot make financial operations. Renewals, additions, and departures will be halted until another owner appears.

By Facundo Di Bona (@facudibona).

Chelsea was left in standby mode after the British government announced a sanction on Roman Abramovich freezing all his assets, including the London club, until May 31.

This does not stop the sale of Chelsea to another consortium: should another owner acquire the Blues, the club will be able to conduct any financial activity.

The problem is that Chelsea, the world and Champions League champions, have contracts with César Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen still to renew, and if they do not speed things up, they could lose everything in a short time. Even the latter is in negotiations with Barcelona.

Rudiger is in the same situation as Christensen and can leave Chelsea mid-year without hindrance, while Azpilicueta ends his contract with June 30, but the team has an automatic one-year renewal option in case the Spanish defender played 30 games this season -something he already did- and cannot execute it because of the sanction.

During the next three months Chelsea will also not be able to negotiate the arrival of new signings and this is a major obstacle for the club’s sporting planning, which will have to wait until the end of the season to start dealing with new arrivals.

The west London club will be able to negotiate the transfer of new players when the new owner takes over.

At that point, Chelsea will be free to operate as normal and, in the meantime, will be able to rely on players who have current contracts with the Blue and are on loan at other clubs such as Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja.

Gallagher and Broja are two of the biggest revelations of the Premier League and have a good chance of staying in the dynamic of the team led by Thomas Tuchel, but if they did not convince him, Chelsea would not be able to execute a sale or a new loan, because the government also prevents them from doing so.
