NCAA – Saint Peter’s made history in March Madness | Playon99 News

The Peacocks became the first fifteenth seed and made it into the Elite Eight, where they will face the best universities in the NCAA. Saint Peter’s made history and will be among the best talent builders in the NBA with a budget 30 times smaller.

Saint Peter’s University, a small New Jersey school with just over 3,000 students, is already one of the greats in American basketball.

The Peacocks, as the college team is known, have made history and have become the biggest miracle in NCAA history after beating Purdue (64-67) in the Sweet 16 and consummating their pass to the Elite Eight of the March Madness 2022.

The Cinderella of this edition of the college tournament is now NCAA history after becoming the first team to start as the 15th seed in the tournament to reach the quarterfinals of a bracket that, as every season, has already run out of winners and that perfectly defines what March Madness is.

Saint Peter’s beat Purdue in a heart-stopping finish in which the Boilermakers’ star, Jaden Ivey, had the ball to send the game to overtime, but his three-pointer with one second left bounced off the rim and fell out of the net, unleashing madness on the bench of the small New Jersey university that today is the history of American sports.

A team that once again exhibited defense as its hallmark and held No. 3 seed Purdue to just 64 points on 24% shooting from three, 42% shooting from the field and 15 turnovers to its credit.

Numbers that explain the triumph of collective work and cold blood in the final minutes, when the Peacocks scored one after another all the free throws, they had available.

Shaheen Holloway, Saint Peter’s coach, described his team after the surprising victory:

“This is who we are. It’s what brings us together. That we didn’t get that three-pointer and that’s where we were at. Once that happened, it was time to celebrate what we had achieved. Of course, now we have another game ahead of us. And then another one”

Daryl Banks III was Saint Peter’s leading scorer with 14 points, while Clarence Rupert -11- and Doug Edert -10- were the other two players to surpass double figures for the side led by Shaheen Holloway, a coach who went on to snatch an MVP from Kobe Bryant when the two shared a team in the 1996 McDonald’s All-American Game.

Kobe and Holloway’s paths diverged and Holloway ended up pursuing careers in Europe – just like Bryant in his early days – and Puerto Rico before making the jump to the bench of the NCAA talent pool.

To understand the miracle of Saint Peter’s in this tournament, this fact suffices: the school has 3,007 students, according to the fall 2021 census, and a budget for its athletic program of just $7.2 million, compared to the $138 million managed by Kentucky.

Peacocks coach Holloway was paid a total of $270,000 in bonus money this season, which is 30 times less than Wildcats coach John Calipari collected.

Saint Peter’s has seen only four of its players ever play in the NBA and between them they total only 126 games.

Now the Peacocks will face the mythical University of North Carolina, Michael Jordan’s alma mater, which entered the Elite Eight after defeating UCLA.

The quarterfinal bracket is completed with the following matchups: Arkansas-Duke, Houston-Villanova and Kansas-Miami.
