Key Highlights

  • A quite a revelation by Md kaif about Wasim Akram being angry on Abdul Razzaq during 2003 WC clash
  • Kaif also reveals that if the catch could have matched with Abdul Razzaq’s hand then could have been in a tight spot back then
  • Kaif was sent out to support Sachin and build a partnership with him

Mohammed kaif, India’s former athlete all-rounder, very much known for his brilliant fielding and running speed revealed something that is worth listening too. Kaif recalls the incident back from the 2000’s while the World cup was going on. To be precise, we are here talking about the world cup match of 2003 when the two rivals, India and Pakistan were clashing against each other.

Mohammed kaif, while speaking to Shoaib Akhtar on the sports news channel, Sportkeeda, revealed that how during a match between India and Pakistan, the senior Pakistani player Wasim Akram was seen fuming in anger. The legendary Wasim Akram was seen fumed on Abdul Razzaq for not standing in the right area of field and due to which dropping the most expensive catch of the match of the great Sachin Tendulkar.

Kaif said that if the catch would have been taken back then, it would have been a tight position for the Indian team to chase the massive target of 274. Unlike the current T20 formats, in those days the target as such was a good run chase score and if a team was able to achieve such target, then it was seen as most suitable for the run rates. Eventually, with the help of Sachin, Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh the match was won by 28 balls to spare and by six wickets. Kaif said,

“Sachin was batting very well. My role was to support him and stay with him. I was told to build a partnership with Sachin and, if he is attacking, just stay there. I fulfilled that role,”

Mohammed kaif being part of the Saurav Ganguly led team was able to make some 35 runs of 60 balls and was sent back to the pavilion by Shahid Afridi at the 22nd over. During that World cup, the Indian team made to the finals but lost it to the 5 times world cup champions, Australia. However, it was very painful loss after getting that far, but it a match that gave goosebumps to every Indian who witnessed that match.

This year in a similar, most excitingly, the T20 world cup (miniature form of WC) is going happen in the month of November and is going to be held in Australia this year.
