Five most memorable ODI wins under Virat Kohli

Rohit Sharma was appointed India’s ODI and T20I captain earlier this week following Virat Kohli’s decision to stand down after the 2021 T20 World Cup

Virat Kohli captained India in 95 games and led the team to 65 wins, losing just 27 matches. He also has the best win percentage by an Indian ODI captain. Virat Kohli also had the highest batting average for a captain, scoring 5449 runs at an average of 72.65.

As Virat Kohli departs as India’s ODI captain, there are five most memorable wins under the 33-year-old.

1. England vs India – 1st ODI (2017)

India beat England with three wickets to spare as centuries from Virat Kohli and Kedar Jadhav helped the Men in Blue pull off their joint second-highest successful run chase in ODI cricket.

England took the field first and posted a mammoth total of 350 – a score that loomed large as India found themselves 63 for 4. But despite their shaky start, India bounced back thanks for Virat Kohli and Jadhav to stun the visitors as they chased down the total with 11 balls remaining.

2. India vs Pakistan – ICC World Cup (2019)

India beat Pakistan via the DLS method to clinch yet another victory over their long-standing rivals. Rohit Sharma scored his fastest fifty in 34 balls and soon enough converted that into a memorable 140 which was enough to win him the Man of the Match award on the day.

Pakistan weren’t entirely bad on the field when facing the Indian bowlers, with Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman keeping them kicking with a promising stand of 104 runs. But Kuldeep Yadav struck to dismiss the pair within three deliveries, and an inevitable collapse began.

Even Pakistan, on their best day, could not save themselves, and India stormed to their seventh win against their neighbours in ICC World Cup tournaments.

3. England vs India – 3rd ODI (2021)

India beat England by seven runs in the third ODI which took place in Pune, and Sam Curran’s unbeaten 95 wasn’t enough to see England through to the end as India came out victorious to win the ODI series 2-1.

After Virat Kohli lost the toss and was sent to bat first, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan gave India a solid start before Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant provided some much-needed backup in the middle.

However, it was the bowling by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shardul Thakur that helped India stay in the game and keep England’s run chase in check for the most part.

4. South Africa vs India – 5th ODI (2018)

This was India’s first bilateral series win in South Africa, barring a one-off T20, and it couldn’t have played out any better. Rohit Sharma was yet again Man of the Match with his brilliant knock of 115, while Kuldeep Yadav and Hardik Pandya combined to take six wickets, bowling out the hosts inside 43 overs.

South Africa were quietly confident they could chase down the total, but Hashim Amla’s run out paved the way for India to get their first series win in SA.

5. India vs Australia – 3rd ODI (2021)

India beat Australia by 13 runs thereby ending a five-match losing streak for India. The visitors were five down in 32 overs, and it seemed as though they would only be able to put up an average score, but Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja had other plans.

The duo combined to nearly double their then score of 152, while Jasprit Bumrah worked his magic with the ball to restrict the Aussies to 289.
