The MCC has amended the rules of cricket this year and the run-out when a non-striker exits the crease has been removed from Unfair Play i.e. Law 41. It has been put in the category of Law 38 i.e. run out.

India women’s all-rounder Deepti Sharma’s run out (Mankading) to England’s Charlotte Dean sparked debate when she walked out of the crease at the non-striker’s end at Lord’s on Saturday. Meanwhile, the statement of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the apex body of cricket that makes rules for international cricket, has come to the fore. He supported Team India and reminded the changes brought in the rules of the game. He also gave advice to nonstrikers.

On Sunday, MCC issued a statement saying that it has changed the rules of cricket this year and the run-out for a non-striker outside the crease has been removed from Unfair Play i.e. Law 41. Also, it has been put in the category of Law 38 i.e. run out. This change will be formally implemented from 1 October 2022.

The MCC also said that it has been done to clarify the matter and to ensure the batsmen do not leave the crease at the non-striker’s end before the bowler bowls the ball. The rules are clear, making it easy to interpret for all umpires at all levels of the game and at all moments of play. As a custodian of the spirit of cricket, the MCC appreciates that it is interpreted differently around the world.

The MCC concluded by saying, “A respectful debate is healthy and should continue. While one person sees the bowler going against the spirit of the game in such cases, the other talks about the non-striker leaving the crease early to take an unfair advantage. The MCC’s message to non-strikers is to stay in the crease until they see the ball leaving the bowler’s hand. So that the way the wicket fell yesterday, it does not fall. An unusual end to an exciting match yesterday. In this, the officials played a proper role and it should not be considered as anything else.”
