Maradona’s Cup – Boca beat Barcelona

Boca Juniors beat Barcelona on penalties and won the Maradona’s Cup that was played in Saudi Arabia. Argentines and Spaniards tied 1 to 1 and defined the tribute to the greatest soccer player of all time from the twelve steps.

The staging was not frowned upon by Diego Maradona’s fans: it was played in a country far from his homeland, on a field that meant absolutely nothing to him and against a team that portrayed him in the worst possible ways. Boca Juniors was his eternal love. The club he screamed for from the farthest reaches of the planet. But Barcelona has been a stone in Maradona’s career. The Catalans threw him out for ‘sudaca’ and he swore eternal hatred at them in his time as a player. The only thing he could make me see them again was Lionel Messi. On the court was Dani Alves, a player with whom Diego had a confrontation because the Brazilian discredited the World Cup that he won with Argentina. At that moment, Maradona replied:

“He’s a jerk. Side was Cafu, Maicon. Dani Alves? Poor…”

There was annoyance from Diego fans because the ‘Maradona’s Cup’ was played in the middle of a family dispute. After the death of the Argentine star, his daughters – accompanied by Claudia Villafañe – clashed with Diego’s sisters, led by ex-personal lawyer Matías Morla, to see who would get the legal and commercial use of the name. Diego Armando Maradona will be eternal. With all due respect to his family, by what right does the name of someone who belongs to the popular plane continue to be marketed? For Morla, this ex-lawyer we are talking about, there will be no respect: it is clear that he was responsible for his death, who manipulated and used him for financial gain. At this time, he is the one who has the power to continue using the Diego Armando Maradona brand and has already stopped several attempts to pay homage.

It was important to address this issue, but it was better to talk about football. The game was not good. Barcelona played with substitutes and some homegrown players from the subsidiary team, but Boca Juniors put their starters. The first half passed without pain or glory. At times it was a stuck game, with friction, without clear interventions by the creators of the game. Barcelona found the goal by chance and with a clear hand from Philip Coutinho that led to a shot from Ferran Jutglá.

Boca Juniors had the key in the substitute bench. It’s not that he was dominated, but that he never proposed. Until Exequiel Zeballos, Aaron Molinas and Alan Varela entered. The youth of the team were, are and will continue to be the key to unlocking the games. Zeballos and Molinas for their ability to dribble, pass and reach the rival area. Varela for cutting the game, recovering and initiating plays. Sebastián Battaglia -manager and the biggest winner in the club’s history- got tired of looking for alternatives throughout the Argentine tournament, but the solution was seen in this friendly title: the club’s kids.
