Manchester United is expected to select German Ralf Rangnick as an interim manager for six months.
Due to work visa issues, the German is unlikely to be in command for Sunday’s Premier League encounter against table-topping Chelsea, but he might manage the club against Arsenal on December 2.
Manchester United has been looking for an interim manager since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired on Saturday after a humiliating 4-1 defeat at Watford, ending a trophyless three-year reign at the club.
Michael Carrick, Solskjaer’s assistant, was appointed interim manager, with United stating that he would remain in control until the end of the season.
Carrick took command of United for their 2-0 win over Villarreal on Tuesday, ensuring that they would finish first in their Champions League group.
Ralf Rangnick, 63, has a strong coaching record in Germany, having previously worked at Stuttgart, Hannover, Hoffenheim, Schalke, and RB Leipzig.
He experienced the most success with Schalke, finishing second in Germany’s top division in the 2004-05 season and winning the DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup in 2011.
Rangnick was named director of football for both RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg in 2012 after the 63-year-old played a key part in the former’s promotion to the Bundesliga from Germany’s fourth division.
Rangnick is officially the Manager of Sports and Development of Lokomotiv Moscow in the Russian Premier League, a position he has held since July 2021.
Rangnick was not managed since the 2018-19 season when he was in charge of Leipzig.
Rangnick has also been regarded with influencing fellow German coaches Jürgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel, and Jules Nagelsmann’s philosophies.
