Manchester United does not lift its head: after a difficult week by being out of the FA Cup, the team could not change the image and drew 1-1 at Burnley, who are last with only one game won.

By Facundo Di Bona (@facudibona).

Cristiano Ronaldo was on the bench because the DT wanted to dose his energy and entered midway through the second half, although he was not enough to give victory to Manchester.

During the first half, the match followed a certain logic, possession was almost exclusive to Manchester United, which from the beginning harassed its rival with attacks that gave it several clear situations.

The Red Devils suffered first due to a disallowed goal against Raphael Varane: the French defender hit a great cross, headed to score and had nothing to do with the controversy, but rather it was Harry Maguire who was offside and the referee considered that he participated of the play because he made a screen.

The team cared little because at 18 minutes it was Paul Pogba who put Manchester United ahead with an accurate shot on goal, after a good overflow by Luke Shaw.

Halftime seemed to have been a turning point for the hosts, who came out to play the game like there was no tomorrow.

As soon as the second half started, Jay Rodríguez scored the tie after a good connection with Wout Weghorst and the complicity of Maguire.

The defender of the England national team had a dark night: on the tie play he came out at the wrong time for the mark and then was exposed without being able to return to his position, while at game time he had to be expelled for a catch shot on Rodríguez when the striker was going alone before the goalkeeper, but the referee showed him the yellow card.

Weghorst could have given victory to the Premier League last with a great shot from outside the area, but David De Gea stretched and managed to deflect the ball.

Cristiano Ronaldo came on in the 68th minute for Edinson Cavani and had a good header that went over the crossbar, but he couldn’t give his team the victory.

For the first time since 2006, the Portuguese striker begins a year with five games in a row without being able to score at least one goal and as soon as the final whistle blew, he ran into the tunnel. Speculation about his future will surely begin.

Manchester United missed the opportunity to pass West Ham and position themselves in fourth place in the Premier League. When the season ends and in case it doesn’t enter the Champions League as it is at the moment, these will be the games that they will regret not winning.
