Reaching 150 is an easy game for India now

Indian mid-range hitter Suryakumar Yadav grows into a new Mr. 360 degree. And if he’s not picking up momentum, India will try to perform well on the board, says legendary former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar. At present, the world’s top Twenty20 (T20) hitter. Surya Kumar dominated the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup, playing a brilliant inning on the Super 12 stage and helping India reach the semi-finals of the tent tournament. Against Zimbabwe’s minnows, he hit 61 balls out of his 25-ball unbeaten streak, hitting balls all over the giant Melbourne cricket ground (MCG).

“Each of these innings was almost 360 degrees. He [Surya] is the new Mr. 360 degree. There was his one shot he batted on his six, just to the left of the wicketkeeper. Then, for example, he squared off a bit in the final over, taking advantage of the angle the bowler was trying to aim for. Then also a lofted extra cover drive. He can play all the shots from the book. There was also a straight drive,” Gavaskar told India Today.

Gavaskar believes that Surya Kumar is the reason India successfully achieved a defensible total. “He is proving to be a player who will lead India to a defensive overall. The score India earned was his T20I score, the highest in the MCG. Without his 61, India would be his We wouldn’t have reached 150,” he pointed out.

Under-fire wicket keeper opener KL Rahul has returned to form for the second consecutive half-century in India’s final two competitions against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. Gavaskar believes that if Surya Kumar fails, Rahul should take charge.

“Right now, his two batsmen in Kohli and Surya Kumar are at their best. KL Rahul has another half-century, which is nice, but you must try to get more than that for a simple reason. India will struggle to score his 140-150 if Surya doesn’t fire. It is therefore imperative that Rahul continues,” Gavaskar added.
