“He Seemed Suffocated…”: Harbhajan Singh Picks India Star’s Form As “Most Shocking Moment” Of IPL 2022

Key Highlights

  • Mayank Agrawal did live up to expectation and seemed suffocated, says Harbhajan Singh
  • Out of all 13 games played by Mayank Agrawal, he managed to score only 196 runs with an average of 16.33
  • Another former player, Piyush Chawla after PBKS pathetic performance in the IPL said, captaincy isn’t for everyone.

“Captaincy isn’t for everyone”, “He seemed suffocated”are words deriving from some of the most famous faces of Indian cricket’s nomenclature, the former off-spinners, Harbhajan Singh and Piyush Chawla. Recently, both former cricketers and now commentators have expressed concern over the leadership of the Punjab Kings team, Mayank Agrawal. And why not!!

The player in this season of TATA IPL 2022, played extremely worse which was not even close to what he might have gone through. Taking over the charge of captaincy from his childhood friend KL Rahul, the new leader was all set to lead his team to victory but who knew the captain will not even let the team half past through. After playing 14 games, the entire landed at the sixth place of the IPL points table.

The captain himself, probably being under pressure could focus on his own game and scored a minimal of 196 runs with and average of 16.33. Which was his worst ever. While speaking to the sports news channel Sportskeeda, Harbhajan Said,

“If we talk about Mayank, I felt that ‘What has happened to him?’ He is such a good player. After getting captaincy, I think he was mentally under pressure. From opening he went down to No. 4. The team was being led from the outside. He is just taking everything. He seemed suffocated. He should have been given freedom. He has been under the radar and surely that could have been a little better,”

Even Piyush Chawla, the former cricketer sarcastically hinted that the Mayank is probably not fit for captaincy or so. Listen what he said in own words while speaking to ESPNCricinfo,

“The way he performed (last year), they (Punjab Kings) showed a lot of trust in him, retained him too but he couldn’t stand true to it. I don’t think he had much prior experience of captaincy whether in domestic cricket or with India ‘A’ and that was visible here. The pressure of captaincy is different and it was clearly visible in his batting as well as how he used to look a bit edgy on the field. Captaincy isn’t for everyone and it showed clearly here,”

So, you see how things comes from around biting you if you don’t do what you are suppose too. Not only is Mayank Agarwal facing criticism, but so is veteran skipper Virat Kohli, whose pathetic performance was evident from his facial expressions and body language. In the entire 16 matches, Virat scored 341 runs with his best 73.
