FIFA World Cup – South America is on fire

The South America is on fire: Ecuador, Uruguay, Peru, Chile and Colombia will play everything in the next two days. The classification for a place in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 is open and in the next two dates they will have to face each other.

By Facundo Di Bona (@facudibona).

Peru and Ecuador tied 1-1 in Lima and left open all the remaining quotas for the teams that play in South America.

Michael Estrada put the visitors ahead when they were only 2 minutes into the game, but Edison Flores tied it at 70 with a stadium that was collapsing and a team that gave everything to continue fighting.

This tie left all the paths open for the South American qualification to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 with only two rounds remaining.

With Brazil and Argentina already classified by a great difference, there are still two direct quotas left and one that will play a playoff, surely, against Australia and in a single match.

Ecuador could have qualified for the World Cup on this day if they managed to win, but they were in third place with 25 points and will have to get at least one point.

Those led by Gustavo Alfaro have a fixture that favors them despite closing the last date with Argentina, since they will visit Paraguay, second to last in the standings.

Fourth place is occupied by Uruguay, who beat Venezuela 4-1 on this day and reached 22 units.

The people from Rio de la Plata are the ones who can have the worst time, but they continue to depend on themselves: they will receive Peru in Montevideo and they will have to travel to Santiago to face Chile in a duel where they will gouge out their eyes between two old acquaintances where there are fights.

Peru had four unforgettable days where they got three consecutive victories and this last draw against Ecuador, but they were left with a bitter taste of being in fifth place with 21 points when they could be above Uruguay.

Those led by Ricardo Gareca are in the playoff zone and will not have an easy time next day traveling to Uruguay, but close at home against Paraguay.

Chile, one step below with 19 points and out of the World Cup, will have the most difficult fixture traveling to Brazil, almost impossible to avoid defeat, in the first game and hosting Uruguay.

Alexis Sánchez’s team achieved a great victory today in La Paz when they beat Bolivia 3-2 with a brace from the Inter Milan striker.

Colombia had started the FIFA date in direct classification, but today’s defeat against Argentina by 1-0 with a goal by Lautaro Martínez and the previous one at home against Peru scandalously left it out of the World Cup.

The Colombian fans are on fire against the coaching staff and the players, whose team has not even scored a goal for 7 games.

Colombia will have to face Venezuela and Bolivia in the next two days, but will have to wait for a miracle of results between the teams that are better positioned.

South America is on fire and in March, when I travel to the continent to see each other again, we will have a series of games to die for.
