Grief gripped Colombian and world soccer this Thursday morning. When it was confirmed the death of one of its most recognized former players: Freddy Rincón. He had been hospitalized since last Monday. And in critical condition with a reserved prognosis. After having been involved in a serious traffic accident in the city of Cali.

Rincón’s family was hopeful and his son had been calm. But from the Imbanaco Clinic, where the former player was taken urgently, they announced:

“Despite all the efforts made by our work team Freddy Eusebio Rincón Valencia has passed away.”

The last medical report stated that Rincón had a “severe cranioencephalic trauma”. This was the result of a terrible crash he suffered the night before.

Quintero, in charge of the announcement, asked in a press conference to honor and praise the life of Freddy Rincón. An honor to the life he lived. Rafael Santos Borré, player of Eintracht Frankfurt, dedicated his goal against Barcelona in the Europa League to Freddy Rincón.

Rincón career

Freddy Rincón played as a mixed midfielder in an attacking role that won him the hearts of Colombian fans. The Colossus of Buenaventura, as he was nicknamed in Colombia because of his physique, came from his hometown team Atletico. But he played for teams such as Independiente Santa Fe, America de Cali, Palmeiras and Corinthians of Brazil.

His first step in Europe was with Napoli, where he only played the 1994-95 season. He immediately caught the attention of Real Madrid and moved to Spain. There he became the first Colombian player to wear the white jersey. But he did not shine as expected.

In any case, he is remembered for his time at the FIFA World Cup. Where he scored the goal that, for Colombia fans, is the most shouted goal in its history.

Colombia was paired with Germany in Group D and had to get at least a point against the Europeans to advance to the next round. It was the 89th minute of that last match against Germany and they were losing 1-0. But Rincón and Valderrama put together a good move. For Freddy to score inside the box and give them the pass in the FIFA World Cup.

In addition, in the South American qualifiers, he was the protagonist of a historic match. Colombia beat Argentina 5-0 in Buenos Aires. And Rincón scored two of those goals.

Rincón fatal accident

There is no certainty that Freddy Rincón was driving the van or was a passenger. But what is certain is that the video that was released shows the speed at which they were driving. Although, in any case, there is no certainty as to who crossed the red light.

It has not yet been clarified who is responsible for the collision. And the subsequent death of Rincón. But it is clear that he bore the brunt of it because he was apparently on the passenger side. Side where the bus that crashed into them had an impact.

On the other hand, the driver of the bus that hit the vehicle where Rincón was traveling tested negative for alcohol. This was speculated by several Colombian media.
