England had a quiet game against an opponent that was among the toughest in Europe. Kane scored the winning goal against Switzerland and became the second top scorer in history for a national team that wants to repeat a good performance at the FIFA World Cup.

Wembley was decked out for Harry Kane’s party and the striker did not disappoint: he scored the final 2-1 against Switzerland to equal Sir Bobby Charlton in second place in the all-time scoring charts for England.

On the same day that marked the seventh anniversary of his debut with England, he reached 49 goals and proved that they are no coincidence despite being in contention at many moments.

The match pitted two teams with their homework done against each other, after two FIFA World Cup qualifiers that were never at risk. To put it in context, England have not lost a 90-minute match since November 2020 against Belgium in the UEFA Nations League.

The lineups left us with two debuts for England: Marc Guehi, who started in the starting 25, and Kyle Walker-Peters, who came in after injuries to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kyle Walker.

In addition, Bent White had to start after Jhon Stones was injured in the warm-up.

The Arsenal defender was the negative protagonist in the opening minutes of the match when Breel Embolo opened the scoring for Switzerland with his head, in an action in which the English defender was very soft on the jump.

The Borussia Monchengladbach striker took advantage of a delivery from Xherdan Shaqiri, one of the most active players in the first half, and the goal further anesthetized a sleepy England side that saw only a stellar intervention by Jordan Pickford, on a long-range Ricardo Rodriguez shot, prevent the 0-2 scoreline.

On the stroke of half-time, Fabian Frei’s mistake on a pass in his own half ended in Luke Shaw’s trademark left-footed shot into the net for the equalizer.

Kane, the star of what should be his party, had been inconspicuous so far, but in the second half he began to make his presence felt and in the 51st minute he tried a lob that came to nothing.

The battery of second-half changes continued to give Kane opportunities and he would not disappoint in the closing minutes, the Tottenham striker making England history by scoring 2-1 from the penalty spot to equal Bobby Charlton’s 49 goals as the second-highest scorer in Three Lions history.

His next victim and in first place is Wayne Rooney with 53 goals, but we will see how the story ends, which will have its next chapter at the FIFA World Cup.
