Canada won and qualified for the FIFA World Cup as the best team in CONCACAF. The Canadians will return to a World Cup after almost four decades and with a team that has laid solid foundations for the future.

By Facundo Di Bona (@facudibona).

The wait is over: Canada defeated Jamaica 4-0 and will return to a FIFA World Cup after 36 years as the leader of the CONCACAF standings.

Canada could have reached their goal with just a point and a game in hand, but they went on the attack in search of victory, even without Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies, who is still recovering from a coronavirus-related heart condition.

The 1-0 lead was not long in coming: Cyle Larin paved the way to the FIFA World Cup in the 13th minute when he received a beautifully filtered pass from Stepehn Eustáquio and the Besiktas attacker made no mistake in a one-on-one situation.

Larin has 13 goals in the qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and is second only to UAE’s Ali Mabkhout with 14 goals.

Canada’s path was completely cleared in the 44th minute, just before halftime, when Tajon Buchanan collected a dead ball from Jonathan David’s cross to make it 2-0.

Canada, far superior, preferred not to slow the game down and settle down to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Even Henry’s injury – it didn’t seem serious – didn’t matter too much as it was enough to bring on captain Atiba Hutchinson.

The Besiktas midfielder – Larin’s teammate – is the only international who was born when Canada took part in its first and only FIFA World Cup in Mexico 1986 and will now have the chance to enjoy it live.

The party was rounded off in the 83rd minute by Junior Hoillet, who picked out Buchanan from a corner and slotted the ball beyond the goalkeeper’s reach.

Such was the jubilation that even Jamaica defender Adrian Mariappa joined in, deflecting Sam Adekugbe’s cross into his own net as the game drew to a close to make it 4-0.

Canada has returned to the FIFA World Cup after a long time and will be an opponent to be reckoned with: they have good team play, their players are fast and, above all, they have nothing to lose to become the Cinderella of the Group Stage.
