Cameroon beat Algeria with an agonizing goal to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar in a thrilling second leg to close the African qualifiers.

The Cameroonians won 2-1 in the 123rd minute of extra time to the pure joy of those who will be playing in their eighth FIFA World Cup.

The match was more than even, with Algeria dominating possession and having opportunities to put the game beyond doubt, but they failed to take advantage of them.

Cameroon did not lag behind: they came out all guns blazing from the start in search of a comeback from the 1-0 lead that the Algerians had established in the first leg.

The first goal for Cameroon came from Eric Choupo-Moting, Bayern Munich striker: Raïs M’Bolhi, Algeria’s goalkeeper, came out to cut a cross from the corner, but collided with a teammate and the ball fell to the striker, who did not waste the opportunity and scored the 1-0 to level the aggregate score.

From then on, parity prevailed between the two sides, with Algeria having a better chance, and after the goal they went all out to attack their rivals in search of breaking the deadlock. However, they could not and the duel went to an extra time that had everything.

In the extra time, everything was a mountain of emotions: Algeria converted the goal that would put history in their favor, but in the end, it was disallowed for a handball.

Algeria did not let their intensity drop and continued: from a corner, in the 118th minute, Ahmed Touba headed in to make it 1-1 and the game seemed to be over.

Cameroon didn’t hang back and didn’t slow down to go out and come back from behind. With a minute left in the match, Cameroon’s Toko Ekambi found a miraculous ball to make it 2-1 and give them qualification to the FIFA World Cup in incredible fashion after 123 minutes of play.

Algeria, one of the most important and powerful teams on the continent, will be left without a FIFA World Cup and will have to pull the cart for four more years.

The coach, Djamel Belmadi, was heartbroken when the referee blew the final whistle: kneeling on the grass, he got up and announced his resignation on the way to the dressing room.
