FIFA – Colombia was embarrassed and Venezuela thrashed

South American qualifiers: Colombia fell to Peru and was embarrassed in their stadium, while Bolivia missed the chance to get closer in the standings with a win against Venezuela.

By Facundo Di Bona (@facudibona).

In a vibrant game, Colombia fell by the slightest difference to Peru thanks to a goal by Édison Flores with just five minutes remaining.

Flores received excellent assistance from Christian Cueva and sentenced a dark day for Colombian football with a powerful shot to the near post that, thanks to the responsibility of goalkeeper David Ospina, ended in a goal.

From the first minutes, Colombia tilted the field, stepped on the accelerator and was able to open the scoring with Radamel Falcao García, but his shot went over the goal.

As time went by, anxiety took over the locals: their legs felt heavy, the ball constantly bounced off them and their clarity was completely lost in the midst of the maelstrom of reaching 30! times to the rival goal and not being able to hit a shot between the three sticks.

For the second part it was more of the same: as happened to Colombia with Brazil, Ecuador and Paraguay, there was no surprise on the field, they were predictable and made everything easy for the rival.

Peru got bigger at the most difficult moment, also supported by goalkeeper Pedro Gallese, and a huge crowd of a few 500 people who became huge in a stadium with 40,000 Colombians.

In the previous one, everything was ready for the Colombian national team to hit the table and get closer to direct qualification for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, but it was not enough to have a team full of big names.

They could have put an end to the bad streak of the lack of goals and the 5 games without winning, of which 4 were draws in zero, but they were sixth in the table and two points behind Uruguay, which is entering the playoff zone.

James Rodríguez had a difficult day because it was noted that he is in an almost amateur league – he plays in China – and he left the stadium surrounded by whistles and making gestures to the stands.

The coach, Reinaldo Rueda, was not spared from the bad night: he received insults from all the fans and went into the tunnel with bottles from the stands.

Colombia was left with one foot out of the World Cup, it depends on other results and obviously to win or to get as many points as possible in the remaining games, while Peru managed to enter the direct ticket zone in fourth place.

Venezuela won in Pekerman’s debut

The Venezuelan national team inaugurated the José Pekerman era with a 4-1 thrashing of Bolivia and a stellar performance by Salomón Rondón, who scored a hat-trick at the Agustín Tovar stadium in Barinas.

In the 25th minute, Salomón Rondón, an Everton player in the Premier League, opened the scoring by finishing off a good team move with a header to the near post.

The match got spicy ten minutes later, when Rondón himself shot inside the area and converted the second goal, but in the next risky play Bolivia’s discount came with a header to the near post by Bruno Miranda.

During the second half, it was possible to see a renewed Venezuelan national team under the new leadership of the historic Argentine coach, José Pekermán, who led Colombia to the World Cup events in Brazil and Russia, with the great performance of his key player, Jefferson Soteldo.

Between the hour of the game, Venezuela sentenced the scoreboard: first with a goal from Darwin Machís thanks to a foolishness from the Bolivian goalkeeper and then with Rondón, who signed a hat-trick ending another excellent collective play.

Venezuela, which has just modified the plans with a new technical command, remains in last place in the qualifying rounds with 10 points, while Bolivia was eighth with 15 units and left the chance to get closer to the playoff zone.
