FA Cup – Klopp won the duel against Guardiola. After many draws, Liverpool was able to beat Manchester City. Everyone thought it would be a formality for the Anfield side. But the Citizens came back to life in a vibrant second half.

By Facundo Di Bona (@facudibona).

Manchester City-Liverpool had been so evenly matched this season that what happened in the first half at Wembley was unexpected. Their two Premier League duels in 2021-22 had ended 2-2.

Liverpool had a cracking first half where they went into the break 3-0 up. But everything was corrected in a second half in which Manchester City came close to balancing the score.

Six days ago, at the Etihad Stadium, the new English soccer derby was a power-to-power match. It was full of alternatives in which both teams beat each other and cancelled each other out. In the English temple called Wembley. And at the gates of the FA Cup final. Liverpool overcame Manchester City with a perfect 45 minutes.

Everything worked for Jurgen Klopp at the start. The pressure, the set-piece, the counter-attack, the positional play. And nothing worked for Pep Guardiola in a first half in which he felt the fatigue of the battle at the Wanda Metropolitano. He rotated and crashed. Without De Bruyne, Ederson and Rodri it is difficult to withstand the pace of Liverpool and leave him without the ball.

Liverpool got off to an early start

Liverpool was a cyclone in a first half in which the pace was only red. Manchester City were subdued and conceded three heavy blows. The first came from Konaté’s header from a corner. The French center-back has scored consecutively with his head against Benfica and at Wembley. A colossus who broke the deadlock before Steffen’s mistake.

The American goalkeeper tried to do one on Ederson and it went wrong. Steffen mimicked him with overconfidence and the ball was picked up by Mané for the goal. A mistake that was worth the final.

Manchester City were knocked out and, again, Mané volleyed home to make it 3-0. A separate paragraph for Thiago Alcántara assists. The Spanish player touched the ball as if he were playing in his own backyard.

A harsh rebuke for Guardiola. The Spaniard was directing operations and Luis Diaz and Mané were wreaking havoc. The match looked like a rout. But everything changed in the second half.

Manchester City revived late on

Manchester City upped the intensity after the break. And within two minutes it was Grealish who put the game to bed with a shot inside the box. 1-3 and everyone was expectant.

Liverpool was no longer comfortable and tried to control the momentum of Guardiola’s team. Gabriel Jesus, who left injured, had a one-on-one that Alisson saved.

Liverpool calmed the waters. But the storm reappeared in the 90th minute, with Mahrez making up a move that Bernardo Silva converted to make it 2-3.

The added time was a madhouse in which Manchester City came close to forcing an equalizer. Liverpool’s area was as busy as Bangkok. But it couldn’t go to extra time. Klopp took the pulse-breaking tie with Guardiola. We’ll see what happens in the Premier League. Because this will continue.
