Europa League – Eintracht Frankfurt rose to fame and eliminated Barcelona at Camp Nou. Xavi’s team lost their undefeated record. And, when everyone thought they were candidates, they were knocked out of the tournament in the Quarterfinals.

They went 14 games without defeat. And high-flying soccer under the wing of Xavi as a coach. However, when you are so high up, the fall usually hurts more.

So, it was for Barcelona in their Europa League quarter-final against Eintracht Frankfurt. Despite a good 1-1 draw in Germany, Barcelona was unable to seal their place in the Semifinals at the Camp Nou. They were eliminated.

Eintracht Frankfurt surprised. They came out to play, pressed high and were 3-0 up before a tighter finish. But they ended up winning 3-2 in Catalonia.

The Germans were a barrage

One of the stars of the match was Rafael Santos Borré. He was the only striker in the 3-4-2-1 that Eintracht Frankfurt set up. And he scored a great goal. After the Bundesliga team was already ahead through Kostic’s penalty after three minutes. It was in the 36th minute when the Colombian put a shot into Ter Stegen’s right-hand corner.

The right-footed shot from outside the area surprised the Barcelona goalkeeper. And it made it 2-0. That’s when the series began to line up for Eintracht Frankfurt. It was an orderly team, with a lot of character and poise. They withstood Barcelona’s tiki taka. But they withstood it very well until the final minutes.

In the second half, as expected, Barcelona was in more of a hurry. Xavi tried Frenkie de Jong as a midfielder to have more fluidity in the game. And Adama Traoré as a winger to find more speed.

He succeeded. But he never found the punch to hurt his opponent. Perhaps a possible penalty for handball, in which the VAR did not work, could have changed the course of the match. Because 2-1 brought Barcelona closer. But it didn’t happen and Kostic made it 3-0 with a left-footed cross after 22 minutes.

That seemed to be the end of the game. And in part it was. Although seeing themselves three goals up, Eintracht Frankfurt loosened up. And Barcelona went up in smoke.

With nine minutes added on, they made it 1-3 thanks to a Sergio Busquets goal in the 91st minute and found a Memphis Depay penalty in the last play. But there wasn’t even time to get it out of the way. Barcelona, surprisingly, was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Europa League.
