Egypt will be a finalist – AFCON

Egypt advanced to the final of the African Cup of Nations and will decide the tournament on Sunday night. Salah’s team had to wait until penalties to beat Cameroon, the local disappointment.

After the goalless draw in the 90 minutes and also persisting in extra time, the key between two of the top favorites was defined from the twelve steps for Egypt to advance to the grand final of the African Cup of Nations.

The hero of the Pharaohs was not Mohamed Salah but Gabaski, the goalkeeper of the team led by the Portuguese Carlos Queiroz, a coach who was sent off after facing the referee at the end of regulation time.

Cameroon kicked off on penalties and Vincent Aboubakar put the locals ahead, but that was the only goal for them.

Then came Gabaski’s show, who saved two in a row: the first against Harold Moukoudi, who defined softly to the goalkeeper’s left, and the second against James Léa Siliki, who also opted to shoot it to the left.

Clinton N’Jie, the last one to kick, threw it directly outside and decreed the passage to the final of Egypt.

The Pharaohs were perfect at the time of the definition: they converted Zizo, Mohamed Abdelmonem and Mohanad Lasheen.

Due to the goalkeeper’s saves and Cameroon’s poor aim, it was not necessary for Salah’s turn to come, always designated for the fifth of the definition.

Egypt has already got used to suffering in this Africa Cup: they were second in their zone behind Nigeria – with whom they lost in their debut – and the first phase cost them to overcome Guinea Bissau and Sudan, both games that ended 1-0.

In the round of 16 they battled with the Ivory Coast and won on penalties, while in the quarterfinals they needed extra time to beat Morocco 2-1.

The African Cup of Nations final will be a one-on-one between two old acquaintances: Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah, Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool teammates.

Senegal, who had beaten Burkina Faso in the other semifinal, already knows its rival in the definition for the title: it will go against Egypt, which this Thursday eliminated Cameroon, the host of the tournament, on penalties, before the attentive disappointment of Samuel Eto ‘or in the stands.

The duel between Mané’s Senegal and Salah’s Egypt will be next Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at the Paul Biya Stadium, in Yaoundé, and there is the particularity that these same teams will have to face each other to define one of the quotas for the FIFA World Cup Qatar Cup 2022.

On Saturday, as a preview, the match for third place between Cameroon and Burkina Faso will be played.
