Who is Conor Gallagher? – The Young Star of Crystal Palace

By Facundo Di Bona (@facudibona).

Conor Gallagher scored twice for Crystal Palace against Everton and was undoubtedly the Premier League player of the week 16. The 21-year-old is the sensation of all the British media for what he did on this date: he scored the first goal entering the area and defining himself as a true forward and scored the third stealing a ball when the game was over and bursting the goal as if Frank Lampard would have worn a long blonde wig.

The midfielder’s token belongs to Chelsea. The Blues loaned him out to Crystal Palace in this latest transfer market. With his new team he played every game -except the first date against Chelsea- and has 6 goals and 3 assists so far in the Premier League. He went looking for starting and got it: he was substituted over in the end just three times. He is truly a fundamental piece for Patrick Vieira’s team.

Gallagher may seem like a classic right-wing midfielder, but in recent games he has shown that he cuts well on the inside and can occupy spaces like just another forward. From behind he becomes indecipherable. An ace up the sleeve of the team that owns it. For that reason, the media began to speculate that Chelsea could repatriate him in this upcoming winter market. On top of that, those of Stamford Bridge do not have the best walk due to injuries of their midfielders. Although it would be very strange if they cut the development of a player who seems to have found the right place to exploit his qualities. In their place they have Mason Mount, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz.

Conor has exploded at the Palace after several years of assignments. Charlton, Swansea and West Bromwich Albion, were the stops leading up to this unique present. In all of them he achieved the consistency that Chelsea did not give him and his mentality is that of a winner: he always changed teams to progress. He was always a step above the one he came from. His performance earned him a call-up for the England national team. Gareth Southgate made him jump onto the field for the second half against San Marino. The young man with blonde hair had already passed through the U17 and U21.

This Gallagher season appears to be an explosion of impressive talent. He has doubled against West Ham, assisted against Tottenham, scored at Wolverhampton and commanded Palace to beat none other than Manchester City with goal and assist.

The midfielder, who beyond his last name has nothing to do with the founding brothers of Oasis and has surely left them speechless with his performance against the Citizens, was born in Epsom, south London. Place from which 10% of the players who play in the Premier League came out. South of London – but in Croydon – is the Crystal Palace Stadium. The team that hosted him this season and seems to be his place in the world. To get to the place where his happiness was manufactured, Conor Gallagher simply took the road and it took less than 30 minutes.
