Champions League – Bayern Munich thought they were favorites against a Villarreal team that never ceases to surprise. But that’s soccer. And it’s made of surprises. The yellows shone in the German sky under Emery and are in the Semifinals.

Villarreal did it again: they reached the Champions League Semifinals for the second time in their history. And again, by eliminating a European giant.

The Spaniards pulled off the upset by eliminating Bayern Munich in an incredible match that ended 1-1. The Germans, always candidates in the Champions League, master, and lord of the Bundesliga, lost to the humble Villarreal.

The Allianz Arena was witness to an epic performance that ensured Unai Emery’s team a place in the Semifinals. All thanks to a 2-1 aggregate score line and a 1-0 win in the first leg.

At Bayern Munich, there are many figures who are suffering from having to watch the Champions League final from the sidelines. The main one is Robert Lewandowski, so far, a contender for the Ballon d’Or.

It was Lewandowski himself who had tied the series. When he scored 1-0 in a play that started in a lost ball by Dani Parejo.

Bayern Munich’s hopes of winning the match were dashed near the end of the game. When, in the 88th minute, a brilliant counterattack led by Giovanni Lo Celso ended in a goal. Gerard Moreno received a great pass from the Argentine. And he set up Samuel Chukwueze, who scored first in a play on the limit of what the VAR could have considered offside.

Villarreal merits

Villarreal was able to hold on against an opponent who predictably owned the ball. They maintained their emotional balance in the face of extremely high pressure. Even in situations in which the players were clearly outplayed, as happened to Foyth with Coman. And so, the goal came.

A high point for Villarreal was Lo Celso and not only because of his contribution to the goal. But because, when he was able to get hold of the ball in a game with a very complicated dynamic, he knew how to be intelligent and precise enough to capitalize on the plays.

In the betting, Bayern Munich were 13-1 favorites against Villarreal. But the team’s resilience was solid enough to pull off the feat. Emery’s team sits at the table for the big European showdown.
