Champions League – Real Madrid advanced in agony

Champions League – Chelsea had all the merits to advance to the Semifinals. But Real Madrid showed their championship credentials and ruined their hopes. Benzema was key again. Although Modric cannot go unnoticed with such a performance.

By Facundo Di Bona (@facudibona).

With a strong dose of suffering. Because from one moment to the next, the two-goal lead they had brought from London vanished. And then they managed to turn the score around when it seemed all was lost with a 3-0 win over Chelsea.

Real Madrid reached the Champions League Semifinals in extra time. With a header by Karim Benzema. An epochal player who will remain in the club’s great history.

Ten semifinals in the last twelve editions of the Champions League are the demonstration of an irrefutable power. Of a decisive greatness in key situations. Real Madrid is one of those who stand up when all seems lost.

It is difficult to understand how it can go from an ostentatious victory in England to extreme suffering. And almost to the point of being eliminated. It is the work of a Real Madrid that does not dazzle soccer. But it has weight in the shirt.

Chelsea, reigning Champions League champions, had done just about everything right at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. They lifted a 1-3 lead to 3-0 with the ticket in hand.

Real Madrid was full of uncertainty and concern. On top of that, the Blues had scored four goals. One was disallowed by the VAR for a handball by Marcos Alonso. A correct decision, even if many do not want to understand it. The rules are clear: if there is a handball in a goal, it cannot be charged.

A match full of emotions

In the first half, Real Madrid had no shots on goal. And after 51 minutes, Chelsea had already equalized thanks to Mason Mount and Antonio Rüdiger. Then there was the disallowed goal. But Timo Werner scored a wonderful goal to make it 3-0. The aggregate score was 4-3 in favor of Chelsea.

The off button went on and the real Real Madrid appeared. The heavyweight. The one that in history reached 31 Champions League Semifinals. The ultimate winner of the tournament.

A spectacular assist from Luka Modric culminated in Rodrygo’s injury-time equalizer. And hope took the match into extra time.

There, Karim Benzema scored with a header, just like in London. And signed the miracle of Real Madrid’s qualification to a new Champions League Semifinal.
