Champions League – There will be a special duel for the best tournament in the world. And Pep Guardiola will face Real Madrid again. The Manchester City coach spoke at a press conference and said it all.

By Facundo Di Bona (@facudibona).

Manchester City will host Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium for the first leg of the Champions League Semifinals. A great match between the king of this competition and an aspiring team. And in the middle, Pep Guardiola, who will have a special duel against an old acquaintance.

“It will be an incredible test for us. It’s an honor to be at this stage. Real Madrid are a great team and we know that, if we were to play against their history, we wouldn’t stand a chance”.

Guardiola acknowledged his satisfaction at once again being among the top four in the competition. As happened last season when his team lost in the final to Chelsea. But he remarked on what they are achieving:

“We are starting to be here on a more frequent basis. When I started, I didn’t expect to be here. I think about how many times I’ve reached this stage and I see how nice it is. You can’t underestimate the road we took to get here. We don’t know if we will ever be in that place again in our lives. That’s why we have to enjoy it and know that we’ll need to play two great matches if we want to be in the final.”

Guardiola praised

As well as admitting Real Madrid‘s greatness. And far from any controversy about past rivalries as when he played or coached Barcelona. Pep confessed his admiration for the Merengue side:

“I have always liked Real Madrid. Since my time playing or coaching at Barcelona. I like many things about this current team. The quality they have is no coincidence. The fact that they came from behind in the series against PSG and Chelsea is no coincidence. All their players are very good. In the difficulties, you see their players who raise their finger and say ‘here we are’. They don’t take one step forward, they take two.”

Guardiola declined to preview the team. But he did say that Kyle Walker has not trained with the squad for 10 days. And John Stones has also been out for a few days. Both of them, injured, will almost certainly be out of the first leg.

To make matters worse, Real Madrid arrives with a sharp Karim Benzema. Key in the series against Paris Saint Germain in the Round of 16 and Chelsea in the Quarterfinals.

The French striker has 12 goals in this Champions League. And about that Guardiola said:

“We will have to defend very well and obviously Benzema, who is a fantastic player player player.”
