Bayern Munich ruined Red Bull Salzburg in Germany and advanced out of the round without a fight. Nagelsmann’s side completely dominated with a hat-trick from Lewandowski, a brace from Muller, and goals from Gnabry and Sané to advance in the Champions League.

Bayern Munich thrashed Red Bull Salzburg 7-1 in the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16 and dispelled all the doubts left by the agonizing draw in the first leg in Austria.

When he has to be, he is. That is the perfect definition for Robert Lewandowski, who with three goals in the first half scored the fastest hat-trick in the history of the Champions League.

Bayern Munich’s Polish striker reached 12 goals in 8 appearances in the current Champions League: the first and second goals were two identical penalty shots and in the third, he capitalized on a mistake by the defense and the goalkeeper to score with an empty net. All in 22 minutes of play.

Bayern Munich was a machine as we are accustomed to and Serge Gnabry crossed to make it 4-0 after a good assist from Kingsley Coman.

For the 5-0 came the prodigal son of the German club, Thomas Muller, who took the ball on the edge of the box and, with a turn, scored with a great shot. A goal and a wild shout, just the way the Bayern Munich idol likes it.

Red Bull Salzburg needed at least the goal to hide the embarrassment and they found it in a good outlet from pressure where Maurits Kjaergaard scored with quality at the near post.

Near the end Bayern Munich did not let their foot off the accelerator and Muller appeared again for the 6-1: he simply received in the box and pushed the ball into the goal.

The final 7-1 was perhaps the most beautiful goal of the match: Lewandowski received with his back to goal, held with his body, and unloaded a backheel for Leroy Sané, who shot with power and closed the scoreboard definitively.

Julian Nagelsmann is a risk-taker and his line-up against Red Bull Salzburg confirmed this: a back three and five strikers plus the always attack-minded Jamal Musiala in the double pivot alongside Joshua Kimmich.

It could have gone wrong, but it worked wonders. Bayern Munich smelled blood. The Bavarian roller returned and advanced to the Champions League Quarterfinals with a masterful performance against an opponent that made them very uncomfortable in the first leg.

They may have a few bad moments, but the Bundesliga champion will always be a candidate to win the title of European champion.
