Arsenal lead chase for Denis Zakaria amid Manchester United links

Arsenal are allegedly ahead of Premier League rivals Manchester United in the hunt to sign Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria.

The Swiss international has made a name for himself in the Bundesliga and has been linked with a number of clubs, including Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Inter, and Juventus.

But according to Fussball Transfers, Mikel Arteta‘s side look to be leading the race to sign the highly-rated 25-year-old as he inches closer to the end of his contract.

Zakaria would be an important addition at the Emirates Stadium as Thomas Partey continues to struggle to find form, and Granit Xhaka is currently sidelined due to injury, as well as questions over his long-term stay at Arsenal

If the midfielder does not agree to a new deal with Monchengladbach by the turn of the year, he will be free to negotiate a pre-contract with a potential suitor during the January transfer window.

According to Christian Falk of SportBILD, “it is clearly accurate.”. There has been interest in the past. Zakaria is on the books of almost every top club in Italy, but he wants the Premier League. Arsenal could be a club that can’t afford them anymore but are interested.”

Zakaria has cemented his spot in Gladbach’s midfield and has started the last six league games for the club, scoring two goals and providing one assist. He also played a crucial role in the 5-0 win over Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal.

Arsenal have also been linked with Lille striker Jonathan David, according to the Evening Standard. The 21-year-old has already scored 12 goals for Lille this season and has another 18 for Canada.

Arteta’s side were previously linked with a move for Zakari, and Gladbach open to letting him leave as well, however, any move depended on whether Xhaka would depart the club during the summer transfer window, which he didn’t

Arsenal are looking to offload £72m Nicolas Pepe, who has fallen down the pecking order in recent weeks, with Arteta opting to pick Gabriel Martinelli or Eddie Nketiah ahead of him. If Pepe is to leave, the Gunners would need to sign another winger, and according to Calciomercato, have already reached out to Juventus over a move for Dejan Kulusevski, who could reportedly be available for £30m in January.

Fichajes also claim that the north London giants are also interested in Club Brugge’s Noa Lang, who reportedly has a £20m price tag.

The Gunners have also been linked with Andrea Belotti in the past and could revive their interest in the Italy international with his deal expiring next summer. With Alexandre Lacazette and Nketiah set to leave the club at the end of the current season, a move for 27-year-old Belotti would help Arteta start the rebuild of his attacking department.

Arsenal are currently seventh in the Premier League with just two wins from their last five games, and four points behind West Ham, who are currently fourth on the table.
