All About Intent”: Daniel Vettori On Virat Kohli’s 30-Run Knock vs CSK

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, the New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori said that Virat Kohli did not show any intent on playing bigger hits than singles in the match against the CSkians.

Virat Kohli is showing glimpses of improvement with every new match. This glimpse was at its peak when Virat Kohli scored 58 runs against Gujarat Titans. But as everyone was expecting better from him, he played 30 off 33 balls against the CSK and got bowled by Moeen Ali’s spin. According to Daniel Vettori, the former New Zealand player said that at no stage Virat was showing any intent to play big shot rather than just few singles.

While talking to ESPN Cricinfo, Daniel spoke openly about the cricketer. Daniel said that he could understand that if it was a fast delivery from spinners like Harbhajan Singh or R Ashwin, but it was Moeen who was trying to spin the ball till the stumps. Simply put,Ali was easy target to smash towards boundaries unlike the likes of the above two mentioned.

“And that is a huge amount of credit to Moeen Ali and his style of bowling – the fact that he was able to hit those areas with a little bit of drift, then that quick spin. So, this type of bowling seems to have troubled him a little bit as of now. It is a great ball. It’s a fantastic piece of bowling and the surface allowed it to happen and the fact that Kohli was looking only for singles allowed it to happen as well,”

Daniel did not stop praising Moeen and said it was indeed a good spell from the bowler and got enough quick spin but at the same time the Daniel criticized the right-handbatter saying,

“When an off spinner can put that much pressure on a right-handed batsman trying to get singles, trying not even look to be aggressive towards him, showed that the pace that Moeen Ali was bowling. And it [pitch] had quick spin, I think that’s the thing that might separate this surface”

Daniel further added by saying,

“But it just feels like it comes down to intent: at no stage did Kohli look like he was going for anything but a single. So, you plant foot down the crease, and you wait for the ball to come. If the ball is in the right spot, you can’t manipulate a single. And Kohli at his best takes on off spin because he’s aggressive, he hits them straight, and then he hits his hard ones. So, it is all about intent.

In the game against the CSK’s the RCB lost 8 wickets but managed to score 173 runs with the help MahipalLomror who made a beautiful 42 off 27 balls and the skipper Faf Du Plessis who made not so good but enough 38 runs off 22 balls.

In return, the CSK were seen in the same position as RCB’s and unfortunately lost by 13 runs. With his win, the RCB jumped to the fourth position whereas the CSK is remaining on the 9th.
